Unspoken Rules of Planning a Destination Wedding

Planning a destination wedding sounds like a dream… and it can be! But what most couples don’t realize is that destination weddings come with a different set of expectations, logistics, and unspoken rules that no one really talks about.

Your guest list may be smaller, and that’s okay
Between time off work and costs, you will get more “no’s” compared to a local wedding. Focus on the people who can be there, not the ones who can’t.
You’re asking more of your guests, so plan accordingly
A destination wedding is more of a commitment, so give plenty of notice (ideally 8 to 12+ months) and consider a hotel block or accommodation options at different price points.
You can’t control everything, and you shouldn’t try to
Weather, travel delays, shipping decor…. destination weddings require flexibility. The couples who enjoy their wedding the most are the ones who let go of the need for everything to go perfectly.
Your timeline needs more buffer than you think
Everything takes longer when travel is involved. Build in extra time for: guests arriving and settling in, and transportation to and from venues. Rushed timelines are one of the quickest ways to add stress.
Keep your decor simple
Bringing your entire Pinterest board to another location sounds great in theory, but it’s not always realistic. Lean into the venue’s setting, such as mountains, ocean views, etc.
Communication is key
Your guests are not familiar with the location, schedule, or expectations unless you tell them. Be clear about dress codes, event timing, transportation, and planned time vs. free time.
Budget for the things people forget
Destination weddings come with hidden costs. Consider shipping costs, welcome bags, and travel for your vendors.
The goal is the experience, not perfection.
